How to install trims in your bathroom

Often an overlooked part of the initial design of a room, trims will offer your space a fully finished and polished look. Panel trims can not only elevate your home interior with sleek styles but it will also help to protect your panelling from damage such as scuffing, damp and mould.

If you’re new to using panelling and haven’t installed trims before, don’t worry, it’s not a daunting task. To help make sure you’re installing your bathroom trims the right way we’ve created this blog to help guide you through every step of the way to ensure your bathroom has a professional-looking finish.

Why should you install trims in a bathroom?

Trims can offer extra protection against things such as mould and mildew, providing you with extra piece of mind in rooms such as bathrooms that are often subjected to damp and mould issues. They also provide a fully polished and finished look to your rooms and protect the edges of your panelling from chipping or damage, making them the perfect option for those looking for a clean-cut finish.

Types of trims

Before you start you’re going to want to ensure that you’ve got the right trims for your panels. There are several types of finishing trims to pick from and each one will offer a unique style. The types of trims you need will also vary depending on the shape and scale of your bathroom and the depth of your panels.

To help you work out which ones you need we’ve included a helpful list below of all the different trim types and usages so you can grab what you need with confidence.

Corner trims - Corner trims provide a sharp and clean finish to the corners of your room, for most standard square or rectangular bathrooms you should only need 4 of these but if you have an L-shaped bathroom or alcoves in your room then you may need more of these.

Edge trims - You will likely have to cut your panels to fit your walls which can leave jagged edges, however, edge trims can be placed over these to hide these edges for a smooth finish.

Watertight finishing trims - These trims provide a tight seal used at the intersection of panels and shower trays/baths to protect against water damage. These types of trims can and should be used throughout the whole of your bathroom and also work in wet rooms as well.

Ceiling trims - Wall panels should meet your ceilings regardless, but installing trims around the top edge of your panels will provide a much cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing finish to your room. The decorative trim will also ensure that in high-humidity rooms, no damp gets behind the panels.

You can also get different types of materials for your trims, from rust-resistant aluminium trims to durable and waterproof PVC trims, so you can find the right style to complete your bathrooms. Installing PVC panel trims

Now we’ve discussed the different types of trims, let’s dive into how you can install them to ensure a proper fit and professional finish in your bathrooms. If trims aren’t fitted properly this may lead to damp and water damage behind the panels.

Measure your trims

Before you start you’ll first need to measure your walls and the trims and cut them down to size before you can start adding them to your panelling. Simply measure each edge or corner that you need to cover with a tape measure and mark with a pencil on the trim where the cut needs to be. We recommend allowing for a small excess to account for any mitred edges.

Fit the trims

There are a few different methods when it comes to fitting your trims. You can do it either before or after you’ve done your panelling and each method has its own pros and cons so ensure you decide how you want to approach it beforehand.

Fitting trims before your cladding - The only trims you can use when installing your cladding last are internal trims, covering trims and only a few external trims - so ensure you have the right ones before fitting. Fitting your trims first will help act as guidelines when installing your panelling and corner trims will even help you hold the panels in place while you fix them to your wall and you won’t need to worry about rough edges as the internal trim will hide them.

Fitting trims after cladding - Fitting your trims after your cladding can be a lot easier in most cases. You won't have to worry about placing your panels around already existing trims so it will give you a lot more flexibility. You might find it harder to take off the back supporting plastic layer of the trim doing it this way but it’s nothing a simple utility knife can’t handle. Once done you can adhere to the edges of your panels.

Whatever method you decide on, in order to fit your trims you’ll need some adhesives such as solvent-free silicone adhesive. Once you’ve fitted your trims give them a wipe down with a cloth to get rid of any excess dust or adhesive and enjoy a beautiful-looking bathroom.
