Bedroom Transformations Using MDF Wall Panelling

Bedroom Transformations Using MDF Wall Panelling

Looking to renovate your bedroom on a budget? MDF tongue-and-groove panelling is an easy DIY that effortlessly adds a touch of charm to a plain wall.

It’s hard to deny that MDF panelling is having a resurgence in homes and has become more than just a fleeting trend. The style is not only aesthetically pleasing, reminiscent of cottages and farmhouses, but also practical. The panels are easy to install, can hide uneven or damaged walls, and offer plenty of versatility as they can be painted to suit any colour scheme.

Once a style synonymous with older, more traditional homes, tongue-and-groove panels are now making their mark in modern interiors. Here’s how you can bring this timeless panel into your own bedroom, from inspiration to installation.

Bedroom panelling transformations: before and after

The bedroom makeover features half-height panelling painted in an Earl Grey shade, which complements the neutral tones used throughout the rest of the room. By choosing a half-height design, the panelling becomes part of the décor rather than the focal point.

The renovation leans into subtle but complementary styling, with details such as the green iced matcha club print echoing the velour green cushions on the bed, while the grey panelling coordinates with the grey fabric headboard.

This project was undertaken by someone with “hardly any DIY experience” who found the process “so much easier” than she anticipated. Her final thoughts? She was amazed at how much difference panelling just one wall could make.

Amelia chose floor-to-ceiling wall panels to transform her “plain, boring, and beige” bedroom.

Before:

Once installed, the panels were painted a warm mushroom shade to create a feature wall that gives the room a cosy and relaxing feel.

How to install MDF tongue-and-groove panelling

The popularity of tongue-and-groove panels also lies in their DIY-friendly appeal. The panels require only a few basic tools and no plastering or excessive prep, even if you are new to DIY.

Simple installation steps:

  1. Use a spirit level to mark a vertical line where the leading edge of the first panel will be placed.
  2. Measure the floor-to-ceiling height at the point where the first panel will be installed and transfer this measurement onto the panel using a pencil and straight edge.
  3. If necessary, trim the panel to the correct height using a circular saw or handsaw.
  4. Apply adhesive to the back of the panel in an “S” or zigzag pattern.
  5. Place the first panel on the wall with the bottom edge resting on the floor. Make sure to align the leading edge with the vertical reference line, then press the panel firmly into place.
  6. This step is optional, but you can fix the panel using finishing nails for extra security.
  7. Apply adhesive to the back of the next panel and fit the half-lap edge over the installed panel, then press firmly into place. Make sure the join is tight and flush.
  8. Continue the process.
  9. The panels are pre-primed and ready for you to paint.

Where else MDF panelling works well

As well as bedrooms, tongue-and-groove panelling works beautifully throughout the home. Whether transforming an empty hallway that lacks character, adding style to a downstairs loo, or recreating a traditional, homely feel in a living room, it’s a versatile way to elevate any space.
