How to install MDF tongue-and-groove panelling
The popularity of tongue-and-groove panels also lies in their DIY-friendly appeal. The panels require only a few basic tools and no plastering or excessive prep, even if you are new to DIY.
Simple installation steps:
- Use a spirit level to mark a vertical line where the leading edge of the first panel will be placed.
- Measure the floor-to-ceiling height at the point where the first panel will be installed and transfer this measurement onto the panel using a pencil and straight edge.
- If necessary, trim the panel to the correct height using a circular saw or handsaw.
- Apply adhesive to the back of the panel in an “S” or zigzag pattern.
- Place the first panel on the wall with the bottom edge resting on the floor. Make sure to align the leading edge with the vertical reference line, then press the panel firmly into place.
- This step is optional, but you can fix the panel using finishing nails for extra security.
- Apply adhesive to the back of the next panel and fit the half-lap edge over the installed panel, then press firmly into place. Make sure the join is tight and flush.
- Continue the process.
- The panels are pre-primed and ready for you to paint.
